Your Guide For A Stress-Free Roof Installation Day
Tip #1 Find a Safe (and Quieter) Place for You and Your Kids During Roof Work
A roof replacement isn’t just messy, it’s extremely loud. Between constant hammering, nail guns, and the movement of materials overhead, the noise can be overwhelming inside your home. The outside of your home will be an active construction zone, and not a safe place for children, or adults who are not licensed for the job. The environment can feel even more unsettling to young children who may not be able to comprehend what is happening. To ensure your family's safety from construction hazards and noises, make a plan to spend time elsewhere on your roof installation day. If you must stay home, explain to your kids in simple terms what will be happening so they know what to expect. We also do not recommend trying to work from home, taking calls or scheduling video conferencing during your roof install. We know this can be an inconvenience, but its usually over in a day, and you'll have a beautiful new roof to protect your family when we're all done!
Tip #2 Plan A Safe Place For Your Pets
Dogs, cats, and even backyard chickens can get pretty unsettled with strangers on the roof and constant hammering overhead. If your pets tend to get nervous, think ahead about how you can keep them calm. Chat with our crew about safe times to let pets outside, or line up a sitter or daycare if needed. It’s better for everyone’s peace of mind. (And no, Len’s Roofing doesn’t offer pet sitting either!)
Tip #3 Make Parking Arrangements For Your Vehicles:
Protect your cars, trucks, or even the boat by parking them in the garage or down the street. Roofing work means nails, shingles, and debris can come down fast, and you don’t want dents or scratches as a souvenir. Also, keep in mind that we’ll likely park a dump trailer in your driveway, sometimes even the night before, so it’s smart to plan ahead and avoid being blocked in.
Tip #4 Take Down Decorations Before Your Roof Installation Day
Roof installation creates vibrations throughout the house, hundreds of nails being driven into your roof deck will do that. To avoid broken frames or fallen décor, take down anything fragile or loosely hung. Pictures, mirrors, and collectibles on shelves are best stored away for the day.
Tip #5 Protect Your Belongings in the Attic
A roof replacement stirs up dust in the attic. If you store holiday decorations, keepsakes, or boxes up there, cover them with sheets or drop cloths before installation. And here’s a pro tip: don’t look up when you first pull down the attic ladder afterward unless you want a face full of dust.
Tip #6 Clear Outdoor Spaces Around Your Home
Patio sets, grills, toys, and garden décor should be moved to a shed, garage, or at least well away from the house. This keeps them from being damaged and gives the crew more room to work safely.
Tip #7 Perform Lawn Care and Tree & Shrub Maintenance
A freshly cut lawn may not make your roof look better, but it does make cleanup easier. Short grass helps nails and small debris stand out so they can be collected quickly. Cover gardens or flower beds with tarps, and if you have trees or shrubs hanging over the roofline, trim them back. This prevents delays and protects your landscaping.
Tip #8 Inform Crew Of Power Outlet Locations
Roofers need power for their tools, so let us know where the closest outdoor outlet is. If you don’t have one, running an extension cord from the garage or a room inside works fine.
Tip #9 Notify Us Of Satellites or Antennas
If you’ve got a dish or antenna on your roof, it will need to be temporarily moved. We can help with removal and reinstallation, but if you’re handy and want to handle it yourself, that works too.
Tip #10 Give Your Neighbors a Heads-Up About Your Roof Installation Date
Like we mentioned earlier, roof replacements are noisy. If you live close to neighbors or in an HOA community, it’s a thoughtful idea to let them know ahead of time. Kids napping, remote workers, and even neighborhood pets will appreciate the warning.
